[Old house] Surrounded by mountain and river, and small fields

Okayama
Japanese style house

Akaiwa City is located in the southeastern part of Okayama Prefecture. The Tsurii area has few residential areas and is surrounded by the great nature of Kumayama and the Yoshii-gawa River. Almost every family owns at least one rice field or paddy field, and everyone grows vegetables and rice separately from their main business. The vegetables are shared among neighbors, which is kind to the newcomers.

As a reaction to being nearly crushed by the crowded trains every day, I lead a more leisurely life, with more time and space in my mind, rather than being active. Until it is time to start remote work in the afternoon, I take a walk, read a book while listening to music on the large porch, or play with my cat. Although I am a complete beginner in farming, I am trying “natural farming” without using pesticides and other chemicals in a field on our property, while getting hints from local people. I am also learning how to make use of wild plants (the other day I ate a wild plant called “suberihiyu” that was growing in my garden for the first time)! I love this environment where time flows slowly and I can be honest about my feelings, and I would be happy to share it with anyone who wants to “rest their mind.

3 Key Points

1Host’s introduction
I am in a 30s female who moved from Tokyo in April 2023. For about 10 years, I worked as an English teacher at a junior high school in Tokyo. I am currently working as an online Japanese teacher and a children's English teacher. I like to drink and cook. My Hong Kong partner comes to visit me twice a month from Tokyo (we speak English and Japanese). In the future, my dream is for the two of us to renovate an old private house on our property and open a guesthouse.
2You can interact with people like this!
Compared to the city center, there are many empty houses in depopulated areas, and I am the only immigrant so far, and there are no tourists, so I have few opportunities to interact with some other people at this stage (sorry). However, the locals are really nice, and if you ask them about agriculture, they will tell you many things, and the local festival and fireworks display will be revived this year. I also have friends who are working on interesting things(owning kitchen car, member of reviving the town community, so you might hear some interesting stories from them.
3You can experience like this!
Anyway, you can relax in the great outdoors! That's all there is to it! You can do things you can't do in the city, such as growing something with the soil, DIY in an old house (although the host has not started yet...), take a walk along the river, go cycling, or go hiking. Of course, you can also just relax at home. The view from the window of the room is great, so you will never get bored even if you are just hanging out in your room. And when your partner comes over, you can eat all the very spicy Cantonese food you want (spiciness can be adjusted. LOL)
