Yakushima Island, a World Natural Heritage site, is an island of rich nature floating in the ocean in Kagoshima Prefecture. Daily life takes place in rich and delicious water, clean air, and star-filled skies. In recent years, tourism, especially eco-tourism, has developed on the island, attracting travelers from all over the world. The village culture still remains strong, with many events held by each island community and dialects still being spoken. On the other hand, one of the characteristics of this island is that many people have immigrated to the area over decades, so still fostering diverse values and cultures.

This is the learcation that solves each community’s assignments and student’s assignments. It is obvious through staying in Yakushima gives a lot of means to your work, study, or life of itself. And we consider that directly connecting to the contribution to the community at the same time.

Relaxing and Healing on Yakushima.

I had the pleasure of staying for two weeks. The natural beauty of Yakushima is well-known, but the kindness and loveliness of the staff at the accommodation were also exceptional. I was able to interact with many other guests as well. Staying for an extended period allowed me to experience the island's atmosphere and discover things that a short tourist visit could not offer. It was a wonderful time. Since the weather can greatly affect your plans, I recommend staying for a long, leisurely period.

3 Key Points

1Host’s introduction
○Owner Mickey moved to Yakushima about 20 years ago and has been involved in the tourism industry ever since. Currently, he operates a guesthouse, a shared house, and a coworking space with the business mission of "increasing the related population of Yakushima”. He is also actively involved in community revitalization by accepting volunteer farmers and organizing café tours.
○Seri, a community manager, was born in Chiba Prefecture. She moved to Yakushima in 2020 after being attracted to the Ogasawara Islands when she was a university student. While living here, she works at a local nursery school and a restaurant and also works remotely online. She welcomes you to Yakushima, valuing "connections" between residents and the local community.
2You can interact with people like this!
・The hostel is part of an international network that brings together a diverse range of people and promotes cross-cultural exchange.
・We will connect you with suitable people for fieldwork, etc. by utilizing our network of city planning.
・We will introduce you to volunteer work such as farming.
3You can experience like this!
・We will also hold events such as sharing of activities and learning together.
・Depending on the timing, you can work (part-time or volunteer) at a local farmhouse.
・We can design the guesthouse together, such as painting. (Ideas such as painting a mural are also welcome)
